List of Most Common Mosquitoes found in the Shenandoah Valley  
Organized by Breeding Habitat and Biting Habit:

1.         Aedes albopictus - container breeder - persistent daytime biter*

2.         Ochlerotatus atropalpus - container breeder - daytime biter? (feeding habits poorly studied)

3.         Ochlerotatus japonicus - container breeder - daytime biter

4.         Ochlerotatus triseriatus - container breeder - daytime biter

*#5.     Culex pipiens - container breeder, as well as in grass choked or polluted puddles, ditch pools, and storm sewers -nighttime biter

#6.       Culex restuans - container breeder as well as in grass choked or polluted puddles, and ditch pools -- nighttime biter

*7.        Culex salinarius - large container breeder as well as in grass choked puddles and ditch pools, shallow grassy ponds and or pond edges and marshlands - nighttime biter

8.         Anopheles punctipennis - breeder in marshlands, permanent pools, ponds, slow moving stream pools and containers -persistent nighttime biter

*9.        Anopheles quadrimaculatus - breeder in marshlands, permanent pools, ponds, slow moving stream pools – nighttime biter

10.       Culex erraticus - breeds in marshlands, permanent pools, and shallow grassy ponds or pond edges - nighttime biter

11.       Coquillettidia perturbans - breeds in cattail marshes or any pond with emergent reeds - persistent evening / nighttime biter 

12.       Aedes vexans - floodwater mosquito (grassy flood pools, woodland flood pools, ditches) - fierce evening / nighttime biter

13.       Ochlerotatus canadensis - breeds in floodwater/woodland pools - daytime biter in shade or on overcast days, also an evening biter

14.       Ochlerotatus sticticus - breeds in floodwater/woodland and meadow pools of river floodplains - fierce daytime biter in shade or on overcast days, also an evening/nighttime biter

15.       Ochlerotatus trivittatus - breeds in floodwater pools in meadows and woodslands - fierce daytime biter (even in bright sunshine) as well as a morning and evening biter

16.       Psorophora ferox - woodland pool mosquito (e.g., beaver dam areas and swamps) - fierce daytime biter in shade or sunlight, also an evening biter

17.       Psorophora columbiae - floodwater/rice field mosquito (puddles and flood pools in open meadows and clearcut areas [e.g., wheel rut puddles]) - fierce day and nighttime biter
